Zakat, also known as almsgiving, constitutes one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, making it obligatory for Muslims, alongside prayer (salah), fasting (sawm), pilgrimage (Hajj), and belief in Allah and His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) (shahadah). For every mentally sound, adult Muslim who possesses wealth exceeding a certain threshold, known as the Nisab, the payment of 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat is mandatory.

Eligible Muslims are required to fulfill their Zakat obligation annually, with payment becoming due once a lunar (Islamic) year has elapsed since meeting or surpassing the Nisab. Subsequently, Zakat funds are distributed to individuals who meet the criteria for receipt.
